Everything around us is constantly changing. From the moment we are born until the end of our lives, we must continuously adapt to the situation in which we find ourselves.
To thrive in an ever-changing environment, we must adapt. And even though you may have heard this many times, have you really thought about what it means to you?
How does adaptation take place?
Think about how you handled situations in the past: giving a presentation in front of strangers, an interview, a critical situation, etc.
Each time, what really helped you was adaptation. For example, we may have been taught to proceed in a certain way and to follow specific step-by-step patterns, following clear patterns. And then when we were faced with the fait accompli, we often discovered that theory is not the same as practice.
Don’t rely on the archaic brain of 500 years ago and use the stable evolutionary strategy. An evolutionarily stable strategy is an impermeable strategy when adopted by a population adapting to a specific environment, that is, it cannot be replaced by an alternative strategy that may be novel or rare.
“It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent. The one who survives is the most adaptable to change.” -Charles Darwin
Think of a lion hunting. Does he refuse to hunt because he doesn’t like it? Do you think a vegetarian won’t eat meat if they don’t have a choice? Not. Because if that were to happen, there is a risk that you might not survive. It is exactly the same in your life. If you refuse to adapt, you condemn yourself to stagnation or even failure.
Take the example of Steve Jobs, who invented the smartphone. While he saw the potential of this technology, he adapted it to meet people’s needs. That’s how he ended up changing the world. He understood that adaptation does not mean giving up who you are, but evolving to fit the environment in which you live.
Many people do not adapt to simple situations in their lives, and then complain that they have problems. Similarly, all people are guided by morals and ethics about how things should work. Later they meet people to whom they want to “show” how things are. But that’s not how the world works.
Adaptation is not optional. It is mandatory. It’s the difference between being a survivor and a spectator in your own life. If you don’t adapt, you will be left behind. It’s that simple.
When was the last time you learned something new? When have you studied a foreign language, a new skill or a new technology, only to adapt to the new environment you live in? If the answer is “a long time” or “never”, then you should ask yourself why and take action.
“Life is a series of natural and spontaneous changes. Don’t resist them – it only creates regret. Let reality be reality. Let things naturally flow in the direction they will.” – Lao Tzu
In life there are things that can be changed and things that cannot be changed. You can stubbornly fight what cannot be changed, or you can decide to adapt and align with what can be changed. This is where the real power lies. Your ability to adapt will determine how far you can progress in life.
Take responsibility and adapt
It’s easy to lament on the sidelines, to blame politics, the economy or society for our shortcomings. It is much more difficult to look in the mirror and admit that we have not adapted, that we have chosen stagnation over evolution.
Stop sitting on the sidelines and blaming the world for your unhappiness. Stop complaining about how life is. Take it in your hands. Adapt yourself. Start learning, evolving, developing.
Take the digital revolution as an example. How many of us have been left behind, clinging to the old ways, while others have embraced the new technologies and thrived? Do you check your email on your phone or do you still go to the post office? Do you order food online or go and stand in line? Do we learn to adapt and embrace technology, or do we refuse to change and get left behind?
What does adaptation mean?
Adapting doesn’t mean giving up who you are or your values. Not. It’s about improving your skills, expanding your horizons and maximizing your potential in this ever-changing world. You can’t go against the flow of life, but you can adapt and learn to swim in the direction that will bring you the best results.
If you want to be successful in life, you have to adapt. Stop resisting change. Learn to embrace the new, develop new skills and adapt to changing circumstances. If you do this, you will be one step ahead of the rest and success will be knocking at your door.
What is the number 1 area in which you did not evolve and adapt as quickly as possible?
Strengthen this skill and react quickly to change.
Stay strong.
