What is more important in business and in life: motivation, discipline or system?
Let’s take them one at a time.
The motivation.
Motivation is a temporary feeling that makes you willing to act, to do whatever it takes to achieve a small goal.
The motivation is good.
It can come from outside or inside.
If it comes from the outside, it won’t last long and you will most likely fail.
Why?
Because, extrinsic motivation refers to what another person wants for you.
It’s when the boss/parent/boyfriend/girlfriend/coach/mentor etc comes along. and prompts you to do something.
At the moment you are very motivated and feel that you can and will succeed.
Unfortunately, this feeling is quickly lost.
It can last a few days at most.
To have a positive effect on you, this motivation must come from within.
It is the moment when you feel a flame in your chest that starts to burn stronger.
It’s the moment when you get tired of the current situation and you are set on great deeds.
E.g:
You’re tired of leading a sedentary and unhealthy life and you’re hitting the gym to lose weight.
Or
You can’t stand stagnant business anymore and you’re super motivated to do everything you can to develop.
Motivation has its role, but it is controlled by emotions.
That’s why you can’t always be motivated.
Some days are really good.
Others worse.
But if you have a business or goals, you know very well that you can’t always skip.
You have to do what you have to do.
No excuses.
This is why discipline is important.
Discipline.
No matter how you feel, keep going.
Discipline with this helps us.
You set some clear habits and stick to the plan:
You wake up every day at the same time.
You go to bed at the set time, no exceptions.
You work all hours, no excuses.
This is the only way you can truly achieve more daring and long-term goals.
If you want to lose weight, you know that you can’t do it overnight.
Not even in the first 2-3 days when you are maximally motivated.
Not.
It’s a commitment you make to yourself.
It’s an obligation you respect because you respect yourself.
It’s like brushing your teeth.
In vain you only wash once a week because you go to the dentist more and more often.
Instead, you wash regularly, 2 times a day, in the morning and in the evening.
Thus, you maintain a balance and proper oral health.
But what do you do when you are not motivated and there are certain factors that negatively influence you so that even with discipline you cannot do what you set out to do?
In this case the systems intervene.
The system.
Systems defeat motivation and discipline.
I’ll give you a concrete example:
If you have an automated system through which people have to go through some steps, regardless of the factors involved, you will manage to deliver to everyone what you promised them.
For example, you can create an automatic system in your business where people contact you, then they are sent to a page with an explainer video, then they will take the next step and so on until finally you qualify or disqualify them and you have nothing stress to do everything manually.
You will only talk to those who want to become your customers and who are also in that typology of customers you want.
So what’s the most important thing to have?
Motivation?
Discipline?
or system?
I would go with the system if we had to choose.
But we know well that there is always a mix between all 3.
And if you have them all, so much the better for you.
